Canvasback: The Sailing Medical Ship

Canvasback, was a 71 foot catamaran that visited the Micronesian Islands.  This vessel came into the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor in 1997, I believe, and tied up at the loading dock in front of the Ilikai hotel, on Oahu, Hawaii. I usually have a camera in my hand so I began snapping photographs of this aluminum multihull. I had never seen a catamaran made of aluminum nor had I ever seen one quite so large. As I was taking my photos I was noticed by a member of the crew and invited aboard. I was captain of a 40 foot trimaran and I appreciated the immensity of this craft. She was very well designed. But then Canvasback had to be large since it was a hospital ship. Her amas were made out to have examining rooms with medical equipment and beds.
The main cabin was very large and comfortable. I enjoyed my visit and the crew were very cordial and pleasant. Their mission makes you feel happy to know that there are people who will take the time from their lives to help others who are less fortunate. Just my opinion.
For more history on this vessel the link is here: http://www.canvasback.net/about-canvasback/
I do not know what happened to Canvasback or where she is now, but she impressed me. Perhaps she is still out there saving lives.
